We will be learning about matter.

By the end of this unit students should be able to

• Compare and contrast the basic properties of solids, liquids, and gases, such as mass, volume, color, texture, and temperature.
• Investigate and identify materials that will dissolve in water and those that will not and identify the conditions that will speed up or slow down the dissolving process.
• Demonstrate and explain that mixtures of solids can be separated based on observable properties of their parts such as particle size, shape, color, and magnetic attraction.
• Explore the scientific theory of atoms (also called atomic theory) by recognizing that all matter is composed of parts that are too small to be seen without magnification.
• Investigate and describe that many physical and chemical changes are affected by temperature.

We are still working on Weather and the Water Cycle.  We will be wrapping up the unit this week.  We will be taking the district assessment Friday.

Students will be quizzed one more time on the Weather and Water Cycle Vocabulary list.

We are wrapping up Life Science on Monday and Tuesday we charge into weather and the water cycle.  The new vocabulary list is here.  The first vocabulary quiz on these words will be Thursday Nov. 2nd.

In Social Studies we are learning about the regions of the United States and focusing on Native American tribes.

We have been working hard over the past month tracking hurricanes.  Students have been responsible for keeping up with their hurricane tracking sheet.  These will be taken for a grade on Friday (10/2).  Students should be caught up, but if they need the coordinate sheet it is here.  There will also be paper copies available in class.

Our life science unit is winding to a close.  We will be having our end of unit test on Friday.  We will also be having a vocabulary quiz on Friday.  The link to the words that will be tested is here.

Weekly Update

We are continuing to work on life science.  Our focus this week is to compare and contrast adaptations displayed by animals and plants that enable them to survive in different environments such as life cycles variations, animal behaviors and physical characteristics. (SC.5.L.17.1)

We have been working hard learning about life sciences.

Students have been busy learning about how living things are classified, researching characteristics of different groups of organisms, and becoming fluent with science vocabulary.

We will be having a vocabulary quiz on Wednesday 10/4.  The Quizlet link to study these words is here.

I'm hoping to wrap up this standard by Friday 10/6 as we move into ecosystems, adaptations and environments next week.

In social studies, students have been using latitude and longitude to locate places.  We've been using data from the National Hurricane Center to track hurricanes and tropical storms.  We will start to move on to learning about Native Americans soon.
